Before the Intervention

At Sandbar Slough on Big Spirit Lake in July 2023, the site was reported to have heavy surface algal growth and a strong hydrogen-sulfide odor.

Intervention

Retrievable permeable bags containing biochar and small numbers of KIKO volcanic/mineral pellets were placed in the channel. Because both materials were present and the study was not randomized, later changes cannot be assigned specifically to KIKO.

Observed Afterwards

Within days, markedly less surface algae and reduced odor were reported near the site. Later observations included clearer water and return or increased visibility of fish, ducks, frogs and other wildlife. Subsequent observations also included deterioration and disintegration of zebra mussel shells.

What the Observation Does Not Establish

The field observations do not establish causation, mechanism, geographic extent or which component of the intervention was responsible. Weather, hydrology, seasonality and other ecological variables remain alternative explanations.

Why It Deserves Follow-Up

The magnitude and diversity of the reported changes justify controlled testing. The appropriate next step is not to defend a mechanism but to determine which observations can be reproduced under defined conditions.
