Zebra Mussel Deterioration — A Specific Testable Observation

The Observation

Following the Big Spirit Lake intervention, numerous zebra mussel shells collected from the shoreline and shallow water were markedly weakened, fragmented or disintegrating. In contrast, older stored shells retained their hardness and structural integrity.

Why Shell Integrity Matters

Mortality alone has many possible causes. Progressive shell weakening or disintegration provides an additional physical endpoint that can be quantified by compression strength, mass, microscopy and shell chemistry.

Presence Is Not the Whole Ecological Story

Zebra mussels have spread widely, but infestation intensity differs substantially among water bodies. This supports asking which environmental conditions permit or suppress proliferation rather than treating introduction alone as the complete ecological explanation.

The Research Question

Can a defined Enerceutial exposure reproducibly alter zebra mussel survival, reproduction or shell integrity under natural lake conditions?

Do Not Begin With Mechanism

A positive result would still require distinguishing water chemistry, microbial effects, food-web changes, mineral balance and other conventional explanations from a proposed KELEA effect.
