Why Not Rely Only on Aquaria?

Laboratory aquaria provide control but cannot reproduce the microbial diversity, sediments, water movement, food webs and environmental variability of a natural lake.

A Mesocosm Approach

Matched cages or contained mesocosms can be placed at the same site and depth. One can contain zebra mussels plus KIKO in a retrievable holder, another zebra mussels plus inert control pellets, and another zebra mussels without pellets.

A Closed-Water Alternative

A sealed pouch containing NEW can provide a non-release intervention. Because the liquid remains enclosed and retrievable, the design also separates direct chemical addition from proposed non-contact effects.

Predefined Endpoints

Survival, shell integrity, veliger density, tissue condition, growth, water chemistry, dissolved oxygen, algae, plankton and selected non-target organisms can be measured. Image review and shell-strength measurements can be blinded.

One Variable at a Time

Initial studies should avoid combining KIKO, biochar and nutrient solutions. Establishing whether one defined intervention has an effect is more informative than a complex treatment whose active component cannot be identified.
