HSV, HZV and HPV — Neutral Red/UV-A Clinical Observations

A published clinical observation that helped shape the ACE Pathway concept

The Observation

Published reports by W. John Martin and Jon Stoneburner described neutral-red dye combined with UV-A illumination in lesions associated with herpes simplex virus (HSV), herpes zoster virus (HZV) and human papillomavirus (HPV).

The 2014 paper reports rapid symptomatic relief and expedited healing in treated lesions. It also describes fluorescence associated with lesions and observations interpreted by the authors as suggesting effects beyond the directly illuminated site.

Why the Observation Was Important

A purely local photodynamic explanation would predict that the principal effect occurs where dye and light directly interact.

The reported appearance of fluorescence beyond treated lesions and healing in distant untreated lesions led the authors to consider a systemic response. This became part of the rationale for proposing activation of the Alternative Cellular Energy Pathway.

ACE Pigments

Materials rendered fluorescent in association with neutral red and UV illumination were interpreted as related to ACE pigments.

ACE pigments had previously been observed during studies of stealth-adapted virus-infected cultures and were proposed as energy-transducing materials associated with cellular recovery.

Their physical properties and biological significance deserve a separate page and direct experimental study.

What Is Observed and What Is Proposed?

REPORTED OBSERVATIONS

Fluorescence associated with treated lesions.

Rapid symptomatic changes reported after treatment.

Expedited healing described in HSV, HZV and HPV lesions.

Observations of fluorescence or healing beyond some directly treated sites.

PROPOSED INTERPRETATION

Neutral red/UV-A activates ACE pigments and the ACE Pathway.

The response may include a systemic, non-immunological component.

NEEDS FURTHER STUDY

Controlled comparison with appropriate light, dye and sham conditions.

Objective lesion-healing endpoints.

Virological measurements.

Reproducibility by independent investigators.

Why This Matters to the Enerceutial Concept

This work is historically important because it links a compound, light, biological material and a clinical response.

It therefore provides an early example of what is now called an Enerceutial process: a system in which changing physical conditions are proposed to increase access to or transduction of available energy.

Clinical Caution

These published observations do not establish neutral-red/UV-A therapy as a generally proven treatment for HSV, shingles or HPV. They provide a specific body of observations that can be independently evaluated and experimentally refined.
