Why Begin With Energy?

Every living cell requires usable energy for survival, specialized function, adaptation and repair. Conventional cellular metabolism supplies much of this energy through nutrient metabolism and ATP production. Yet cellular function can become limited when oxygen delivery, blood flow or metabolic efficiency is impaired, or when energy demand rises substantially.

The Alternative Cellular Energy (ACE) Pathway was proposed from observations suggesting an additional contribution to cellular energy beyond conventional food metabolism. The ACE concept does not require conventional metabolism to be unimportant. It asks whether an additional energetic resource can contribute to functions that conventional metabolism alone may not adequately support under particular circumstances.

More Than a Substitute for ATP

The ACE Pathway is proposed as more than a backup for inadequate ATP production. It may have distinctive roles in adaptation, non-immunological defense, repair, regeneration, organized bioelectrical activity and higher levels of brain function.

This distinction is important. The clinical question is not simply whether a patient has “too little energy,” but whether the availability, production, distribution or utilization of energy is inadequate for a particular biological function.

Five Clinical Entry Points

1. INADEQUATE OXYGEN AVAILABILITY — lung disease, including COPD and pulmonary fibrosis.

2. INADEQUATE BLOOD SUPPLY — cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular disease.

3. INEFFICIENT CELLULAR METABOLISM — diabetes, mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic and selected genetic disorders.

4. INCREASED ENERGY DEMAND — growth, infection, immune activity, injury, repair and regeneration.

5. FAILURE OF SPECIALIZED ENERGY-DEPENDENT FUNCTIONS — proposed examples include neuronal function, differentiation and apoptosis.

How Evidence Is Presented

The preferred sequence is:

OBSERVATION → MEASUREMENT → CONTROLLED COMPARISON → REPLICATION → MECHANISM

Clinical reports and published observations can therefore be considered on their own terms, while proposed ACE/KELEA explanations remain open to testing.
